NO ELECTION DAY 2013

NO ELECTION DAY: Free Trieste’s new campaign.

Free Trieste’s new campaign starts with two events:

On Sunday, February 17th, 2013:

Free Trieste holds speech “No to Italian elections in the Free Territory of Trieste”. The speech takes place in the Northern Free Port, in front of the Magazzino 26 (Storehouse 26).

Italy has lost sovereignty over Trieste on 15 September 1947: this means, before the coming into force of its very Constitution (1 January 1948). A State cannot summon its elections in another State: for this reason, Free Trieste considers Italian elections held in Trieste illegal and illegitimate.

Because the 1947 Italian Peace Treaty grants Trieste its independence. It is also an Italian law, and Italy recognizes both the Free Territory of Trieste and its local administration. Italian authorities cannot oppose our peaceful actions in defense of legality.

On Sunday, February 24th, 2013:

On the day of the elections, we are marching in the streets re state once again that Trieste has the rights to its own elections, summoned under its own laws. Just like Italy cannot summon its elections, say, in Switzerland just because it is close to it and its people speak also Italian, so it cannot do in the Free Territory of Trieste.

UPDATE: the event is postponed to Sunday March 3rd, 2013.

In almost 60 years, no politicians elected in good faith by the people of Trieste stood for legality. So why should someone elected in bad faith?

The people of Trieste have longly believed to nationalistic propagandas about Italy’s alleged love for them. Yet, the Italian administration has done little to nothing to, say, let the international Free Port of Trieste attract investors, create jobs, or to respect Trieste’s special taxation, which would be convenient also for Italian companies.

This means that Italian politicians do not deserve Trieste’s votes.

Free Trieste’s legal battle is not about nationalism, it is about the law. Like all people, the citizens of the Free Territory of Trieste deserve that their rights be respected. Our Movement is not a political party, no representatives elected in illegal elections can ever re-establish the rule of law.

Voting over and over again people who breach the law and our rights would mean committing a crime against ourselves.
