TRIESTE: PUSHING BACK THE ITALIAN ADMINISTRATION’S ABUSES

December 8th, 2013: Free Trieste's demonstration "Our future is our Port".

THOUSAND OF TRIESTINES STAND FOR THE INTERNATIONAL FREE PORT AND FOR LEGALITY. FREE TRIESTE’S PETITION ASKS THE UN TO INVESTIGATE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS COMMITTED BY ADMINISTERING ITALIAN AUTHORITIES AGAINST CITIZENS OF THE FREE TERRITORY OF TRIESTE.

On Sunday December 8th, 2013, 3,500 people participated to Free Trieste’s demonstration “Our future is in our Port“.

They marched from Campo Marzio to the Northern Free Port, calling for the re-establishment of the rights, in force, established under the 1947 Treaty of Peace. In particular, the demonstration focused on port rights and jobs.

The citizens proclaimed together an “Ultimatum for the free port of Trieste” requesting the administering Italian Government to re-establish the rule of law within February 10th, 2014. After enduring decades of illegal oppression, the people of Trieste have a lot to say about the officers that should administer their State.

Trieste is calling for legality since 2 years, specifically, for its international legal order. Since 1947, Trieste is an independent State and it has a unique international Free Port.

Since 1954, the Italian Government administers Trieste and the international Free Port, which only exists as the Free Territory’s State corporation. No other State can interfere in its management, not even Italy. And indeed, Italy recognizes Trieste as a neighbor State in its own legislation.

The demonstration for the international Free Port takes place at the same time as Free Trieste presents the UN Security Council its petition based on the UN Charter. The petition requests an investigation in the present-day Free Territory of Trieste (once “Zone A”) and suggest, among other solutions, the appointment of a new adminsitering Government.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights received the first 15,000 signatures on December 10th. This date is not coincidental: it the anniversary of the Universal Declaration on human rights.
