OUR FUTURE IS IN OUR PORT!
Trieste, 8 December 2013. – Since April 2012, Free Trieste organizes marches and events to advocate the re-establishment of the rule of law in the Northern Free Port (photo above). In particular, to re-activate its special free zone regime, suspended by the Commissioner of the administering Italian Government with unlawful decrees.
It’s years that local Italian politicians try to remove the area from State property to feed it to profiters and illegal speculations. All while telling the people of Trieste that this area is no longer suitable for port activities. They go as far as labeling it “porto vecchio” as in “old port” because to them old equals useless. The truth, of course, is completely different.
The Northern Free Port is a strategic sector of the international Free Port of the Free Territory of Trieste.
This northern sector alone is 70 hectares big, it is right next to the Central Train Station, it has an 18-meters-deep seabed, and a free zone placed under international legal constraint (1947 Treaty of Peace with Italy, Annex VIII, art. 3):
“1. The area of the Free Port shall include the territory and installations of the free zones of the port of Trieste within the limits of the 1939 boundaries.”
This is why Free Trieste’s demonstration ended exactly in the Northern Free Port. Here, the leaders of the Movement presented an 8-point program for the immediate re-activation of the whole international Free Port.
Only achieving the international Free Port’s full potential as a port area Trieste can once again enjoy employment and wealth, not only for the Free Territory, but also for other States and regions in the area.
