On Sunday, April 1st, 2012 the Free Trieste Movement is holding the first demonstration in defense of the Northern Free Port. Local authorities try to sell it as an “old port” (to them, old = useless). In truth, the Northern Free Port is a strategic, constrained sector of the international Free Port, a State Corporation of the Free Territory of Trieste.

The procession is set to follow the path of the streets envisioned within the Northern Free Port.
Unscrupulous speculators are trying to get their hands on the Northern Free Port since a long time. With the support of representatives of all local political parties, the speculators want to destroy this precious port area. The destruction of the Northern Free Port would be not only illegal, but also stupid: this area covers 70 hectares and its seabed is 18 meters deep. Reactivating it as a port and trade center would create new jobs and wealth for the city and also for its surroundings.
The international Free Port of Trieste is vital not only for the Free Territory of Trieste, but also for the whole International Community of States.

Art. 3, annex VIII of the 1947 Treaty of Peace in force:
“The area of the Free Port shall include the territory and installations of the free zones of the port of Trieste within the limits of the 1939 boundaries.”
