THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER’S PROPAGANDA AGAINST THE FREE TERRITORY OF TRIESTE

IL PICCOLO’s PROPAGANDA AGAINST THE FREE TERRITORY OF TRIESTE

23 June 2013: according to former mayor Dipiazza, "The FTT has zero legal bases".

23 June 2013: according to former mayor Dipiazza, “The FTT has zero legal bases but lots of supporters”. According to historian Spazzali “twisted facts”.

According to the “well informed” Italian-sponsored press, the FREE does not legally exist.

After Free Trieste’s demonstration in Vienna and after the Notice of Default addressed to the Italian Government, the local corrupt establishment could no longer stay silent. This establishment is the same that, since 1954, rules over Trieste, unharmed as long as it shields in anacronistic nationalism.

This is the political establishment responsible of the ongoing economic, social, and environmental annihilation of the former pearl of the Mediterranean.

This Central European port-city that went from flourishing shipyard to Italy’s state-landfill. The Karst, a natural wander, is now a dumping ground for Italian ecomafias. Half of Trieste’s international Free Port is artificially inactivated for the sake of Italian ports.

Indeed an inept political establishment at best. Meritocracy? Unknown. People who systematically destroy Trieste’s economy cannot stand Free Trieste’s legal battle to re-establish the rule of law.

The rule of law is set in the 1947 Treaty of Peace with Italy. At art. 21.1, the Treaty declares Trieste independent, and assigns to the new State the only existing international Free Port.

Under art. 21.2, the Allied and Associated Powers – as well as Italy – recognize the Free Territory of Trieste. The 1954 Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Free Territory of Trieste confirms this.

The Italian Government must continue the previous, British-US Government‘s duties: acting as the Free Territory’s own provisional Government, respecting its own laws and authorities.

It is not surprising that this political establishment, responsible of decades of spoliations (eg. the Free Territory’s State properties were assigned to the Italian Republic ex officio. An outright billion Euro theft) fears the awakening of legality. Nationalistic lies can no longer shield it. The citizens are becoming aware of their rights. And they are rather displeased because the Italian parties promote poverty and ruin instead of legality.

This is the only explanation to the local establishment’s latest “performance” on its very favorite podium: local newspaper “Il Piccolo”. Free Trieste is a successful organizations? Let us dismiss it, let us make it look like a bunch of “loony instigators”, even better if they are some big brother’s puppets. A twist of reality rather surprising, if it weren’t for the local newspaper’s fame (in Trieste people affectionately call it “Il bugiardello” as in “the little liar”).

No matter how undeniable the international Treaties in force are – or how authoritative the sources that recognize them are. For instance, Italy itself, the US Department of State, the European Union.

The local politicians known best: according to former mayor Roberto Dipiazza the FTT has “zero legal ground”. Free Trieste’s claims “have no legal bases” if one asks mayor Cosolini.

Lawyer Antonini goes as far as to call them “idiocy, huge nonsense, odd theories of some lobby that wants to paralyze the Port for 30 more years”. Finally, historian Spazzali accuses Free Trieste of “going back to find, on grounds of essential ignorance, facts to twist for its own use…”.

Congratulations: all rhetorics, zero legal principles. The only notable thing here is insults. Those local politicians go as far as insulting the many people of Trieste who stand for legality supporting Free Trieste’s actions.

A mention of honor to the mayor, because Roberto Cosolini accuses the dangerous Free Trieste of speaking “too aggressively”. As if people living in misery, despair, facing an economic crisis ought to protest “kindly” for the sake of some politicians’ feelings.

Mr. Cosolini has just sued La Voce di Trieste, the only local independent newspaper. Its crime? Denouncing the attempted expropriation of Trieste’s international Free Port.

This is the same port that the local politicians have conveniently labeled “Porto Vecchio” as in “old port”, to persuade the people that, since it is old, it must be also useless).

Politicians across the board support this operation: their ultimate goal is to dismiss the port, turn it in an urban area, and get rid of its free zones. A massive housing speculations, very much supported by the Municipality. No matter if it means sacrificing the only international Free Port of Trieste to the interests of Italian ports. Which Trieste is not.

But Trieste’s people won’t listening to propagandas anymore.
