22 June 2013: Trieste meets Vienna

HUNDREDS OF TRIESTINES MARCH IN AUSTRIA’S CAPITAL.

They were many. They left at sunrise. All to revive an historical, unforgotten connection: the bond between Vienna, Austria’s capital, and Trieste, the Free Territory‘s capital.

At least 300 people marched in Vienna. Indeed, it is unprecedented. Free Trieste organized this demonstration right after presenting a Notice of Default to the Italian Government. A Notice seeking compliance with the 1954 MoU regarding the Free Territory of Trieste, which establishes the Italian Government’s temporary civil administration over Trieste.

Administration does not mean sovereignty. It means compliance with Trieste’s laws and respect of its independence, established under the 1947 Italian Peace Treaty.

However, the Italian Government fell short on its obligations. For instance, its local representatives are since long “simulating” Italian sovereignty over the Free Territory and its international Free Port.

Which means, for instance, that Trieste’s people and enterprises, including shipping companies and other port-related activities, are forced to pay the huge Italian taxes.

However, this goes against both Italian and international laws.

Trieste calls for its consolidated rights, and it does so in Austria, her “real” mother.

6 Centuries of common history are returning after 6 decades of harsh nationalism.

Trieste is not Italy. It is MITTELEUROPA.
