CITIZENSHIP: AN UNDENIABLE RIGHT

CITIZENSHIP: AN UNDENIABLE RIGHT

3,681 TRIESTINES DECLARE THEIR CITIZENSHIP OF THE FREE TERRITORY OF TRIESTE BEFORE THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
This is the first important result of my petition to the EU Parliament, which many have supported since. The petition is about a fundamental aspect of “Question Trieste“: the right to citizenship, which Italian authorities have violating in their latest census. A census extended to the people of the Free Territory of Trieste, which exists to date under the 1947 Italian Peace Treaty.
A census is an act with which a State exercises its sovereignty, all while addressing questions to its citizens. It is a data collection that includes economic notions, which the State then uses to tax its people. Avoiding or answering only partially to a question results in fees and criminal liabilities.
The census is based on Regulation (EC) No 763/2008 of the European Parliament – “on population and housing censuses” and Decree Law No. 78 of 31 May 2010, converted into law with Italian Law No. 122 of 20 July 2010, n. 122 – “Urgent measures regarding financial stabilization and economic competition” – art. 50 (Census).
Therefore, the census can only take place within the Italian State’s territory, and within the EU.
But, again, Trieste and the surrounding area don’t belong to Italy. They have the same Government, but for different reasons: being the Italian State’s elected Government is very different from being the Government sub-entrusted with the Free Territory’s provisional civilian administration by the Governments of the US and of the UK (under the 1954 MOU regarding the Free Territory of Trieste).
Among other things, the petition denounces that under the Italian Constitution itself, art. 22:
“No-one may be deprived of his legal capacity, citizenship, or name for political reasons”.
This action is obviously important. The Free Trieste Movement is supporting my petition. After the EU, the petition is being addressed to the UN Security Council, the authority in charge of defending the Free Territory.
Standing for the rights of the people of the Free Territory of Trieste has never been more important.
