Things are certainly changing in the Free Territory of Trieste.
Everybody expects it. In 2017 Trieste and of its international Free Port‘s legal status may be once again confirmed. Trieste’s air is filled with unique expectations and hopes.
So far, everybody knows that it is impossible denying the truth. After 5 years of legal battles, many are the citizens of Trieste who not only declare themselves citizens of the Free Territory, but refuse to accept a simulation of Italian sovereignty over their State.
Even those who won’t openly take sides are waiting for the end of what they regard as the Italian “occupation”.
It is a unique atmosphere, one to feel personally.
It is as if people were getting ready to see the past era, the past decadence and Trieste’s suffering come to an end. As if their city was getting ready to finally open its 1947 wings of new, independent State. Almost as if about to return to its ancient splendors of a city-port, of Mitteleuropa’s maritime capital. Just as it was during the Austian-Hungarian empire’s ere.
However, Trieste’s people are not alone waiting for the fateful moment.
Italians, just like the other inhabitants of Trieste’s bordering or neighboring States, would indeed enjoy economic advantages upon the re-establishment of the Free Territory’s correct administration. Especially because Italian law already recognizes it.
The Italian political establishment’s only dilemma is about ending an anacronistic, artificial, patriotic “sacrality”. Indeed, the (declining) Italian nationalists regard Trieste as the apex of a bloodshed national unity.
On another side, if Trieste’s international Free Port broke free from the suffocating Italian control, it would become too much of a competitor for Italian ports.
And so, facing the real possibility to lose the special trusteeship mandate over Trieste, certain Italian environments (official and nor) get ready to take hold of it anyways.
Even, why not, through some “puppet” Government. All of this to discredit before the International Community those standing for the Free Territory of Trieste. Even at the price of ridiculous accidents.
One such accidents is rather recent. It is a foolish claim about the establishment of a pretentious, self-declared “government” of the Free Territory of Trieste. Its leaders are a former Italian soldier and fixer and a former Italian policeman (one is from Campania, the other is from Sicily). Ludicrously, they claim to be citizens de jure of the Free Territory.
The two have involved in their farce some small groups of fake pro-independence activists. Those who are already compromised, having run (failing spectacularly) in the lates illegally summoned Italian administrative elections in Trieste.
Such initiatives may sound laughter. Yet, they are not to be taken lightly: they are very harmful to the real struggle for the Free Territory’s rights. The one that the majority of Trieste’s people supports.
All whili initatives like the one mentioned above only serve to satisfy the ambitions of small irrelevant gangs made of irresponsible, profiters, or foolish people. People who never did one useful or good thing for the Free Territory of Trieste.
