Trieste: before Court for the free port, with two opposite defense strategies

On Monday, 9 November 2015, starts in Trieste a trial against 17 supporters of Trieste’s independence. They are charged with “unauthorized demonstration” and “seditious gathering” by Public Prosecutor F. Frezza. The accusations refer to the 10 February 2014 demonstration in defense of the international Free Port. At the time, all the accused persons were part of the Free Trieste Movement. Some of them have later left it, crating an hostile organization to run for Italian elections.

This results also in two, different defensive strategies: the “electoral” group demonstrates before the Courthouse claiming that the judiciary must be “stopped with votes” (to their own party!), while Free Trieste, chaired by  Roberto Giurastante, is “taking on the trial confidently, on the bases of both evidences that disproof the accusations and of the provisions of international and Italian law regarding the legal status of the Free Territory of Trieste and of its Free Port”.

In solidarity with the accused persons, 40 members of the Free Trieste Movement denounced themselves for the same crime. However, Public Prosecutor Frezza did not request them be committed for trial.

The Free Trieste Movement is releasing more declarations to the press on the same Monday, at the end of the hearing.
