Monday 9 November 2015. – Early today the Court of Trieste held the first hearing in the trial against 17 supporters of the independence of Trieste. Public Prosecutor F. Frezza charged them with “unauthorized demonstration” and “seditious gathering” for a demonstration held on 10 February 2014 to defend the international Free Port. A port established as a State Corporation of the Free Territory of Trieste (Treaty of Peace with Italy, 10 February 1947).

The Free Trieste Movement presented three preliminary exceptions to prove that the State of Italy has no jurisdiction over the Free Territory, that an Italian judge is not a third party, or impartial, and that the very Constitution of the Republic of Italy binds the judge to recognize the State sovereignty of the Free Territory of Trieste.

The judge, Marco Casavecchia, scheduled the next hearing for 16 November to evaluate the exceptions.

Free Trieste’s President, Roberto Giurastante, considers that this is obviously a political trial, based on old laws from the surviving Fascist code, yet, he trusts it to end with the defeat of the nationalistic Italian powers that are violating the democratic rights of the Free Territory’s citizens.
