RESPECT FOR THE DEAD

IS IT POSSIBLE ASKING TO BE BURIED WITH YOUR STATE’S FLAG? NOT IN TRIESTE, UNLESS YOU MEAN THE ITALIAN FLAG.

It is worth commenting the events that took place last week, at the funeral of one of Free Trieste’s enthusiastic supporters, because they exemplify the intolerance faced by the citizens who support the re-establishment of the rule of law in the Free Territory.

This is a time of great excitement: many people are rediscovering their forgotten identity and rights, which Italian nationalistic propaganda have concealed for decades. It is the rights established under the 1947 Treaty of Peace: Trieste’s independence, its unique international Free Port, a new State in the heart of Europe, with its own citizens and laws.

A State with its own flag: a silver halberd on a red field, a flag that many proud citizens wave as they proclaim themselves free citizens of a free State. A flag that disturbs the local Italian authorities, indeed, they use it as little as possible, even during official celebrations.

To the local nationalistic “camorra” the flag of State of the Free Territory is an insult to the professed italianità of Trieste and it brings back to light inconvenient truths, like Trieste’s independence.

Yet, when religions enter the field and join the repression, well, this goes beyond human limits.

This state of things is regressive, it overthrows the fundamental principles that separate good and evil.

I have already expressed dissent for the Roman Catholic Church’s absence at the ceremonies held on 3 November 2013 to remember the Austrian-Hungarian soldiers fallen in WWI. Once again, this religion seems to identifies itself with the local Italian authorities and follows their orders: this is negative at best.

In November, at Prosecco – Prosek, the Imam of Koper showed that mercy and compassion are fundamental characteristics of God, therefore the main virtues of men.

But this time, at our dear Anita’s funeral, the Roman Catholic priest denied to cover her coffin with the “inconvenient” flag: how deed is the crisis of absolute values in our era! A crisis that affects also compassion, the fundamental teaching of Noah’s sons.

Goodbye Grandma Anita, you left the meanness of this world. And, up there, you will certainly find the God of the just.
