10.2.2014: Free Trieste defends the Northern Free Port

The Northern Free Port is not “old”!
Defending the Northern Free Port: Free Trieste’s sit-in on 10 February 2014!

Trieste, 11 February 2014. – Yesterday (10.2), the Free Trieste Movement held a press conference regarding the expiring of its “Ultimatum for the international Free Port” presented on December 8th, 2013 during a demonstration in Trieste’s Northern Free Port.

The date corresponds with the anniversary of the signature of the 1947 Treaty of Peace with Italy. Under the Treaty, the Free Territory is an independent State with an international Free Port, and the Free Trieste Movement stands for its complete reactivation.

After the event for the press, Free Trieste held a symbolic sit-in in the Northern Free Port: hundreds of people participated until midnight despite the heavy rain (see gallery).

Free Trieste holds the events since April 2012, raising awareness about the unexpressed potential of the international Free Port of Trieste, long forgotten also by the Italian Government, which administers it since 1954 under a sub-mandate entrusted to it by the Governments of the US and of the UK on behalf of the United Nations.

The international Free Port of Trieste is a State corporation of the Free Territory of Trieste, and it faces two dangerous threats. One is Spanish company Gas Natural’s planned LNG terminal. The second is the local political establishment’s attempt, across the board, to eliminate half of the port.

The second operation consists in removing from State property the 70 hectares of the Northern Free Port (deceptively renamed “porto vecchio” as in “old port” because to them old = useless) and allow a building speculation in the area. This constitutes a breach of both Italian and international laws.

Free Trieste is presenting the next phase of its actions for legality in the following days.
