Trieste, November 19th, 2012. – After the successful demonstration on September 16th and the counter-demonstration on September 29th, Free Trieste continues its stand for legality.

Yesterday, November 18th, the people of Trieste have once again stood in defense of the international Free Port of Trieste. This time against Spanish company Gas Natural and its LNG terminal.

The LNG terminal should be in Zaule, near Muggia. Local politicians fail to mention how dangerous such a plant would be. They conveniently don’t talk about the pollution it would cause. Or the safety measures it requires. They say it creates jobs. Unfortunately, after the construction ends, so do the majority of such jobs.

If those politicians had any concern about jobs, they’d know that Trieste already has a potential source of good, lasting and stable jobs. It the international Free Port of Trieste, with its unique Free Zones and special legal status.

The international Free Port is a State Corporation of the Free Territory of Trieste, it is administered by an International Commission, and it offers many economic advantages, directly and indirectly. In particular, it grants special rights to the States of Central Europe. All it takes is compliance with laws in force.

None of this can happen if the local politicians turn the port in an urban area. Or if they promote Gas Natural’s planned LNG terminal.
