Trieste: 853 claim the rights of the citizens and the Free Port
Trieste, 2 January 2016. – On the last day of 2015, the Free Trieste Movement lodged 853 new signatures to the “Charter of Rights of the Citizens and of the Enterprises of the Free Territory of Trieste” at the Commissioner of the Government’s office.
The document includes a list of rights, including those arising from Trieste’s international Free Port of Trieste and its consolidated legal status.
This is why the Movement’s cover letter informs the Commissioner about this unchangeable legal status. Indeed, attempts to remove from State property the Northern Free Port (the s.c. “old port”) and to urbanize it «are illegitimate and constitute civil and criminal offences, giving raise to liabilities for the public administrators and functionaries who commit them».
The lodging of the new signatures took place during a demonstration in front of the elegant, Habsbourg era palace by the sea that hosts the Office of the Commissioner of the Italian Government. During the demonstration, Free Trieste’s activists held symbolic crosses with inscription “Citizen of the Free Territory of Trieste”.
