FREE TRIESTE: 1st DEMONSTRATION ON THE BORDER

36 HOURS ON THE BORDER!

1950s: the State border between Trieste and Italy.

FREE TRIESTE: 1st DEMONSTRATION ON THE BORDER

From Saturday 27th, [2013] to Sunday July 28th, Free Trieste held its first sit-in on the border between the Free Territory of Trieste and Italy.

This border exists since 1947. During the good British-US administration, Trieste’s first Government took care of it. However, in 1954, the Italian Government was sub-entrusted with administering Trieste and “forgot” to maintain street signals and other signs to identify the border. Hopefully the people of Trieste forget, right? Wrong!

The people of Trieste remember their rights, and they want them back. During the sit-in, Free Trieste’s activists are installing reproductions of the original signs to remind everyone that Trieste is its own independent State.

At the opening of the sit-in, Free Trieste hosted a flag raising ceremony. During the event, the Movement’s activists provided information about Free Trieste’s work, and they collected signatures in support of the latest petitions, most importantly, the one regarding the appointment of the Governor of the Free Territory, addressed to the United Nations.

All participants who have Free Trieste’s “FTT ID Card” replica may request a special, commemorative stamp.
