Referendum on Oil Drilling:
Thursday 14th, at 11.30AM: Free Trieste’s the press conference
The Free Trieste Movement appreciates, in an environmental perspective, the Referendum on Sunday 17th to limit Italian oil drilling in the Adriatic Sea, and it hopes for a great victory for the YES. However, the Movement must raise the problem of the legitimacy – or lack thereof – of such a vote in the Free Territory of Trieste, entrusted to the Italian Government under a mandate of temporary civil administration.
To legitimize the Referendum in the Free Territory, the Commissar of the provisional Italian Government needed to issue a specific decree. Free Trieste requested it, but in vain. Without such a decree, the vote of Trieste’s people can be challenged as illegitimate. Even, it can void the Referendum.
The problem is being discussed in detail during a press conference on Thursday 14 April at 11.30AM in Free Trieste’s own conference room (Movement’s office, 1st floor) in piazza della Borsa 7.
