Pollution – The environmental disaster in the Free Territory of Trieste

From the cover of documentary “Pollution” (DVD edition):

Pollution is a powerful documentary that investigates environmental problems in the present-day Free Territory of Trieste, an independent State with an international Free Port, established in 1947 and sub-entrusted, since 1954, to the temporary civil administration of the Italian Government. Taking advantage of the tensions of the Cold War, an Italian mafia-like system of corruption seized power in Trieste and, hiding behind anachronistic fanatic nationalism, it obtained abnormal immunities and protections from the Italian authorities.

One of the consequences is the serious pollution that affects the Free Territory, used as landfill of State to dispose of the waste of bordering Italy from the shores to the Karst Plateau: a threat to legality as well as serious wound to the citizens of Trieste, which remained unaware of it for too long. Now, however, right from the Karst of Trieste, where hundreds of caves and dolinas were polluted with hazardous waste by Italian ecomafias, starts the reveal of the truth and of the importance to put an end to this scandal.
