Antisemitism: a yellow star against Free Trieste

The Movement denounces it and answers organizing a kosher dinner

Someone glued on Free Trieste’s doorbell a yellow star with the derogatory writing «KOSHER RESTAURANT AT PAROVEL AND GIUDASTANTE RING FREE TRIESTE».

Trieste, 16 November 2014. – The Free Trieste Movement stands for the Free Territory and international Free Port of Trieste. Lately, on Facebook, its enemies are targeting the organization with an escalation of antisemitic insults, claiming that the Movement supports and receives funds from “Israeli Zionists.”

Those spreading such accusations and insults are the “dissident” circles based in via Roma [later via Crispi]. In Free Trieste’s opinion, they are mostly representatives of the Italian nationalist right wing and neofascism. Indeed, it is people are prone to displaying behaviors and mindsets worth a gang of vandals.

Now, Free Trieste is denouncing that on Saturday, November 15th, early afternoon, someone glued the Movement’s doorbell, in the historic city center (Piazza della Borsa 7) a six-edged, yellow star, just like the badges Nazis forced on Jews. On the symbol someone wrote, in capital letters «KOSHER RESTAURANT AT PAROVEL AND GIUDASTANTE RING FREE TRIESTE».

The yellow star and the writing refer to the Movement’s President, Roberto Giurastante (his name is intentionally misspelled as “Giudastante”), to political analyst and investigative journalist Paolo G. Parovel and to a recent article of Il Piccolo announcing a dinner with seafood organized for the Movement’s members at its social club, where there once was a Armin and Charlotte Goldberger’s kosher Restaurant, opened in 1907 and shut down in 1930s, during the fascist era.

The Movement in reporting to the authorities this and the other anti-Semitic insults it has received, as well as any other form of racism. Furthermore, identifying the culprit author won’t be difficult, since the whole area is covered by security cameras.

As for the specific provocation of antisemites, Free Trieste’s answer is that the Movement will be honored to organize a real kosher dinner in memory of the “Restaurant Goldberger”, an excellent symbol of a richer, cosmopolite and multi-religious Austrian Trieste.
