ON THE BORDER OF THE FREE TERRITORY OF TRIESTE

IMG_5847

We are on the border of the Free Territory of Trieste again in this April weekend. The sit-ins take place in the Northern sector, on the border of State with the Republic of Italy.

After the first day, a crowded Saturday, it is time to start again. Our people remained during the night, continuing the sit-in to the former border crossing of San Giovanni di Duino.

Here the border cuts in half the Burgo paper mill, so once the rightful provisional administration of the Free Territory of Trieste is restored, this factory might be subject to two different taxations: one, the “light” one of the Free Territory of Trieste, and the “heavy” taxation of the Republic of Italy.

A true paradox, Italian-style mess. That must be solved quickly: would this factory chose to remain in the State that taxes it the most?

Sunday, in Italy, takes place the referendum on oil drilling in the Adriatic sea, polling stations were organized also in Trieste, in spite of their illegitimacy in our Territory which is, for instance, an independent State.

And on Sunday the presence of the citizens on the border with Italy does also have the precise meaning of the refusal of illegal Italian election from the citizens of the Free Territory of Trieste. Restring the existing border means sovereignty and citizenship. Of the Free Territory, of course, so not of Italy.

Sunday does also take place the first visit that follows the borderline, recently found by the volunteers of Free Trieste. Five hours of trail, from the border with Slovenia to the border crossing at San Giovanni di Duino, about three kilometres. But it is five exciting hours for those who, for the first time, discover the existence of this border and of their identity of citizen of a Free State.

Old boundary stones of the Allied Military Government (AMG FTT) appear from the grass, rescued from their previous abandonment. New border signs appear next to those of the AMG to show their continuity: it is the triangulation points signed with stakes by the volunteers of Free Trieste.

On Sunday, 17 April 2016, I was on the border of the Free Territory of Trieste: I am a citizens of the Free Territory of Trieste.
